If you’ve been experiencing a ringing in the ear then it’s important you get a proper diagnosis before you start to treat it. This is because this is a complex condition, with many possible causes, that needs to be understood before the right treatment can be selected.
Underlying Conditions
Ringing in the ear can be a result of an underlying condition such as high blood pressure (hypertension), ear wax build up or an ear infection. These are generally easier to treat and the most obvious causes of tinnitus. If the doctor doesn’t notice one of these then they will look for further underlying reasons.
You will need to see an ear, nose and throat specialist who will perform a number of test to see whether there are any other underlying causes behind the tinnitus. They will look at your medical history, ask you questions about the types of noises that you can hear, and then perform a number of tests.
The tests you might need to go through include:
- Balance tests,
- Blood tests,
- Hearing tests,
- Ear X-Rays.
If these don’t show obvious results then you may need to go through further testing. Or it may be the case that your ringing in the ear doesn’t have any obvious underlying cause. But whatever you do, get that official diagnosis before working on self-help strategies to cure your tinnitus.
